EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
